Well, this page was a major factor in my deciding to buy a 1987 Savage with about 9000 miles. Got a great deal on it, and it should hold me for the 18 months or so until I can get the Sportster I want (I'm 6' tall, and as cool as the Savage is, I'm afraid it will be just too small for a long-term "keeper" for me).

I'll be getting the (all-stock) Savage in a couple days. I plan, first off, to put on a Supertrapp and have the bike dyno'd for the carb adjustment. I may look into a set of forward controls to make it a little less cramped for me (although $500 US is one-third of what I'm paying for the bike, so I'll have to weigh my options carefully-- maybe highway pegs, instead).

Question-- would the 80's models have the plastic spacer in the carb, as do the later models? And besides the Supertrapp/carb mods, does anyone have any other quick/cheap performance tips? This bike is in great shape-- it's been down only once, and has some scuffs on the right rear taillight, headlight bezel, and front fender-- all minor. It has new-ish tires and brake pads and runs great. The (original) belt seems to be in great shape. Except for the one time it was dropped (by a friend of the owner) it's been well cared for.

Grateful for any advice, and REALLY looking forward to riding again after thirteen years!

Cheers,

John
